Samuel Smith, son of John and Sarah Warwick Smith, was born 22 April 1833 in Essex. At age three, his mother died and he was reared by his paternal grandparents until, at age fifteen, he was apprenticed to a shoemaker in Danbury. A convert to the LDS Church, he emigrated to Utah in 1862, then was sent to Franklin, Idaho, to build up a settlement.
